He left home to fight for the Confederacy in 1864. It is thought that he died near Pearl River Mississippi and is buried in a small rural cemetery near there. In a document entitled, "Cemeteries of Smith County Mississippi; Records compiled by Mr and Mrs Tom Richardson complete through 1967; Sponsored by: Smith County Historical Society" it is recorded "Located 10 miles from Raleigh. 23 degrees north of west. Section 16 T3 R6E. This is a rather old and neglected plot. As of 1968 it had around it an old iron fence. Bushes and trees had grown over the plot. It is said that John Baldwin, father of Jim, Newton, Jefferson etc is buried here. It was difficult to tell how many graves there might have been. Too overgrown and neglected to make an accurate account."
