Alice Ramona Ballinger, 79, died Saturday Oct. 1, 2005, at her Atascadero home surrounded by her family. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Atascadero.Alice was born July 31, 1926 in St. Francis, Kan., the seventh of nine children to Lawson and Anastasia Cook. During and after World War II, she worked at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colo.In the early 1950s, Alice was introduced to Glenn Ballinger in Anaheim by her friend who was married to his brother, Jimmie. Alice and Glenn married in early 1953 in Mexico.Alice quit her job and became a homemaker. Together, they adopted three children: David in 1958 and Jeffrey and Marcia in 1960. They made their home in Orange County until 1971, when the family moved to Atascadero.Alice was active in Women's AGLOW, an international Christian women's organization, for much of the last 31 years. Alice was also a member of the choir for more than 25 years at St. Luke's.She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Glenn; son, Jeff of San Luis Obispo, and his wife Mary Schiller and their daughter Rachel Dlugatch; daughter, Marcia Martin of San Luis Obispo, and her children, Sonia Reyes-Miller of San Luis Obispo, and Nickolas Martin of San Luis Obispo; sister, Margaret Carl of Littleton, Colo.; sister, Marge Hansen of Littleton, Colo.; brother, Tom Cook and his wife Marlene, of Parker, Colo.; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by son, David in 1987.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice Partners of the Central Coast or St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
