Ernest Harmon Ball, son of Alfred Walter and Emma Laura (Moore) Ball, was born 27 Mar 1897 in Martinsville, IN. His father died of typhoid when he was five (in 1902). His mother married William Whaley on 1 Dec 1904 but died four years later when Ernest was 11. Ernest lived the next few years with his stepfamily that included a stepbrother, Herman Whaley.

On 14 Mar 1917, Ernest married Cecil Pauline Buskirk daughter of David and Clarinda (Vandeventer) Buskirk. Ernest and Cecil's first child, Jennie May, did not survive her premature birth (19 Jan 1918). Their second child, Clara Belle, was born 25 Mar 1919. Their third child, Francis Earl, was born 25 Jan 1921. Their fourth child, Lorraine, was born 14 Jul 1922, during which Cecil died of a postpartum hemorrhage. Following Cecil's death, Ernest put his infant daughter Lorraine up for adoption and placed Frank with Cecil's sister Esta (Buskirk) Leach. Later, Frank changed his surname from Ball to Leach. Ernest placed Clara with his mother Emma's first cousin Benjamin Harrison Lewis.

According to Clara, Ernest claimed that he had sired twin girls Wanda Irene & Wilda Louise born 20 Dec 1918 to an unidentified partner.

Ernest married Carrie (Whitson) Means on 15 Jun 1926. They remained married until her death in 1964. They had no children together. Carrie had six children from her previous marriage to Means.
