MESA, Ariz. - Coila Bernice Ball passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011, at Odyssey Hospice in Mesa.

She was born May 6, 1919, In Sault Ste. Marie, to Allen and Nina (Rutledge) Rowan and grew up in Dafter. During her teen years, she moved to Eau Claire, Wis., where she resided with her aunt (Coila). She continued her studies and graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1935. After graduation, she moved back to Dafter and worked as an operator for Bell Telephone Co. in Sault Ste. Marie.

She met the love of her life, Vincent Ball, and they were married on Jan. 6,1946. Together they spent 53 years together. Vincent preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 1999.

Coila and Vince moved to Iron Mountain in 1949, where Vince worked for Montgomery Ward as a furniture salesman. In 1951, they adopted their infant son, Gregory. In 1952 Vince entered into a partnership with Robert Christy and they formed Ball & Christy Furniture Co. in Iron Mountain. Coila stood by Vince's side and offered encouragement and hope as the business grew.

Coila became involved in local civic groups and participated in various functions of the groups. After Vince retired in the mid-70s, they moved to Mesa. Coila always enjoyed the camp on Lake Ellen.

She also loved to go fishing with Greg and his dog, Spot. She always looked forward to the company picnic every summer at Lake Ellen and entertaining the employees of Ball & Christy and their families.

Coila was a sports nut. She enjoyed her bowling nights and leagues at Recreation Lanes and won several trophies and awards. She was an avid golfer and scored three holes in one during her lifetime. She enjoyed Boy Scouting activities with her son and was a den mother as Greg grew up.

Coila was an outgoing, fun loving and kind woman who loved people, especially children. In turn many loved her, too.

Coila is survived by her son, Gregory; daughter-in-law, Gloria and grandson, Vincent of Mesa; granddaughter, Jaime (Michael) Stone of Boston and step-granddaughter, Katherine Delgado of Mesa and Bogota, Colombia; sisters-in-law, Esther Beeten of Florida and Shirley Edward of Sault Ste. Marie; as well as many nieces and nephews.
