The son of Rice Garland Barksdale and Elizabeth Smith Barksdale married Mattie Catherine Duncombe. He served with Company K of the 5th Regiment of Virginia Cavalry. He was conscripted in Albemarle in 1864 and was soon admitted to a hospital in Charlottesville with a gunshot wound to the left hand. He applied for a medical discharge in January of 1865 and was retired in March.
