Gwen Barksdale Wilson, 97, died after a brief illness at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Hattiesburg, MS the daughter of Mary and Ethelbert Barksdale. Mrs. Wilson graduated from Jackson Central High School and attended Mississippi University for Women. Mrs. Wilson married the late Dr. Thomas E. Wilson, Jr., prominent Mississippi Cardiologist, in 1930. She became active in the State and Central Medical Auxiliaries, serving each twice as President. Mrs. Wilson was a Charter member of the Monday Luncheon Club and the Woodland Hills Garden Club. She won numerous awards for her flower arrangements. Mrs. Wilson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson. She enjoyed her family, she crocheted beautiful afghans for each of them. Mrs. Wilson enjoyed playing bingo with her friends at St. Catherine's Village, her home for the last 13 years.


Mrs. Wilson will be remembered for her sense of style, sharp mind and zest for life. She was an inspiration for all who knew her and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Bert and husband and grandson William F. Lynch Jr., of Ridgeland, MS, seven grandchildren Mary Frances Lynch Turner, James W. Lynch, John E. Lynch, Thomas H. Lynch, Clara Gwen Wilson Waller, Thomas C. Wilson, James W. Wilson and 15 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wilson is also survived by her sister, Jean Barksdale Holmes and husband Miller, of Jackson and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Mrs. Wilson's 5 grandsons and nephew Miller P. Holmes Jr., of Yazoo City.
