"One by one the friends we cherish,
Pass in silence to the tomb;
The sweetest flowers soonest perish -
Fade away in early bloom."

MRS. LILLA MAY BARKSDALE, wife of Mr. Edwin Barksdale, and daughter of the late Mr. O.P. Wright, of Hinds county, Mississippi, was born on October 10, 1864; was married March 30, 1880; became a member of the Methodist church, May, 1883; and was stricken down in the midst of her joyous young life, November 1, 1886. Besides her sorrowing husband, she has left three little children to mourn her death. It has been said death compensates for its losses by the oblivion it throws over human faults. In the death of this beautiful and bright young person, there could be no such reparation. Her life was pure and good, and was a continual ministry of kindness and happiness to those around her. Her spirit was as sinless as the temple in which it dwelt was beautiful. She was amiable in disposition, bright in intellect, and charming in manners, because she was devoid of affectation, and her conduct sprang from a goodness of heart as pure as the crystal waters that leap from the natural spring. Her crowning attributes were love and kindness. They were especially displayed in the sacred relations of wife and mother. She departed, as she came, a creature fresh from the hand of her God. No human agency was left undone to save her to those who loved her; but alas!

"They could not render back,
The golden bowl that's broken at the cistern."

God's hand touched her, and she sleeps. An angel has been added to the hosts of Heaven.

The Clarion, Jackson, MS, November 3, 1886.
