Born in colonial Redding, Connecticut, baby Elnathan was the 10-month old son of Aaron Barlow and the former Rebecca Sanford, and a nephew of celebrated American poet-statesman Joel Barlow. The eldest of ten children who would eventually be born to his parents, Elnathan's name was subsequently given to their second child, born the following year. The children's father, Aaron Barlow, would also distinguish himself as an officer in the Continental Army during the coming Revolutionary War.
