Clarion Ledger Jackson, Mississippi June 3, 2005

Katheryn Estelle Barlow, 81, beloved wife of Julius Francis Barlow, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2005, in Jackson. Visitation will begin at 12 noon until the 2 p.m. service Saturday at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Lakewood Cemetery.

Born in Jackson on January 5, 1924, Kathryn lived the entirety of her life in the Jackson area. In 1940, she met the love of her life, Jules Barlow, orchestra leader, and was united in holy matrimony on December 9, 1940. They enjoyed a beautiful and loving union for 64 years. The City of Jackson benefited tremendously from the efforts of the tireless Kathryn Barlow. Kathryn and Jules were charter members of the Leavell Woods Methodist Church in South Jackson. Throughout the 50s, she was a statewide volunteer for the Girl Scouts, organizing many successful fund-raisers. In the late 50s, Kathryn began a career with Allstate Life Insurance, working her way up the ladder to become the first female insurance agent in the entire Southeast at a time when women did not work outside the home. She won many awards and honors as a result of her outstanding work for Allstate Insurance.

But of primary importance in Kathryn's life was her role of wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a fantastic cook and took great pleasure in seeing her loved ones eat her good Southern food. She cooked the way she lived, with great emotion, passion, and perfection. Kathryn (known as Kee-kee to her grandchildren) will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Surviving her are her husband, Julius Barlow of Jackson; daughter, Naomi Daniel of Austin, Texas; two granddaughters, Rene and husband, Dan Sutton of Austin, Texas and Michelle and husband, David Paniagua, also of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren whom she adored, Jackson Sutton and Olivia Paniagua, of Austin, Texas.

Memorials may be made to Leavell Woods United Methodist Church, 3302 Terry Road, Jackson, MS 39212.
