Charles Ballou Barnes was born to Charles Ebenezer Barnes and Orpha Ballou (Barnes)in Turner Junction Illinois (now West Chicago). He was raised in St. Charles and Lyndon Illinois. He became interested in all things mechanical through working with machinery on his parent's farms. Charles attended the University of Wisconsin graduating in 1900 with a degree in Mechanical engineering. From 1900 - 1910 he worked for a variety of engineering companies including specializing first in steam engine mechanics, and then plant design and construction. He was employed by several railroads in the Chicago area. In 1910 Charles was hired by Western Electric in Chicago as a construction engineer. He met his wife to be, Dellora Sims, in Chicago. They married September 14, 1912 in Morrison Illinois. They lived in Oak Park Illinois where they raised three daughter - Charlotte, Doris, and Elaine. In 1930 Charles was transferred to Western Electric in Kearney New Jersey as plant operations supervisor. His responsibilities came to also include plant operations in Brooklyn NY. With his wife and daughters, Charles lived in Montclair NJ. He retired from Western Electric in 1941 and assumed the position of plant operations manager for Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, NJ, where he passed away on July 19, 1951.
