BARNUM—Henriette Sherwood was born in New Milford, Conn., November 24. 1839, and died at the home of her son-in-law, the Rev. James A. Hurn, New York Conference, in South Bethlehem, N. Y., March 25, 1912, her mind unclouded and her sickness brief. She became a church member at fourteen, had a teacher's training at New Britain, Conn., and taught until she was twenty-four, when she was married to Ezra Barnum, March 27, 1864. Their home was on a farm near Gaylordsville. Later, a few years before Mr. Barnum’s death, they left the farm and moved into the village. Mr. Barnum died in 1899, and since then Mrs. Barnum lived with her daughters, Laura, wife of William Newton, of South Kent, and Mrs. Hurn, with frequent visits in the home of her step-daughter, S. Maria, wife of Andrew C. Clark, of New Milford, Conn. Mary, her eldest child, a graduate of Fort Edward, ambitious, good, not physically strong, was carried off by typhoid in 1892. This sorrow was bravely borne. She was buoyant, hopeful, breezy, original, "always in haste, but never in a hurry." Especially in the line of church and Sunday school work she was fertile in suggestion, loyal to her church and catholic toward all Christians.
