Abe Barnwell, founder of the local amateur astronomers' organization, Astronomers of Humboldt, died Tuesday afternoon in a local hospital following a prolonged illness.

Besides his interest in astronomy, Barnwell was a pattern maker, a key figure among local archers and had a wide local reputation as a builder of scull boats, drag saws, furniture, telescopes, in-curve bows for archers and replacement parts for many kinds of industrial machinery.

Barnwell was born in Eagleville, Modoc County, and was raised in Hydesville. He received his education in pattern making in San Francisco around the turn of the century. While in San Francisco, he met and married Ida Tormey. He and his family returned to Humboldt County in 1924 and had resided here since.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ida May Barnwell; daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Hughes, Coaling; Mrs. Myrtle Lane, Susanville; brother, Bey Barnwell, Willits; sister, Mrs. Gail Stubblefield, Santa Rosa; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from Cooper Mortuary, Chapel of the Ferns. The Rev. Oscar Link will officiate. Private inurnment will follow at Ocean View Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Polio Foundation.

Pallbearers will be Rodney Gossard, Percy Turnbull, William Abbay, Jr., Samuel Quintrell and Donald Comstock.
