Mrs. Hannah White Barnwell, 81, of Squire Pope Road, the first known registered nurse among Hilton Head Island natives, died Monday at the Hilton Head Center. Mrs. Barnwell, mother of island businessman Thomas C. Barnwell Jr., was widely known as a midwife. She also started the island’s first day care center/kindergarten in 1956.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church followed by burial in Talbird Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church from 7 p.m. today until the hour of service.

Born Oct 09, 1904, Mrs. Barnwell was a native of Hilton Head Island, the first child of the late Benjamin and Grace Gibson White. She attended grade school on Hilton Head, Mather Boarding School for Girls in Beaufort and completed nursing training at Good Samaritan Waverly Hospital in Columbia. She returned to the island and was a nurse and midwife until her retirement in 1972.

In addition to being a nurse she taught school. In 1956 she started the island’s first day care center/kindergarten in the yard of her home, located near Hudson’s Seafood restaurants.

Mrs. Barnwell was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where she sang with the senior choir. She was also a member of the Missionary Club, Charity Sisters, Eastern Star of Hardeeville and was a Sunday school teacher.

She was the wife of the late Thomas S. Barnwell. Survivors include a son, Thomas C. Barnwell Jr. of Hilton Head; an adopted son, Jack Barnwell of Savannah; her stepmother, Nellie White of Hilton Head; four adopted daughters, Mrs. Emma Kirkland Jackson and Mrs. Beulah Kirkland, both of Atlanta; Mrs. Lucille Burgess Patterson of Hilton Head an Mrs. Henrietta Fields Thomas of Ft.
Bragg, NC; nine brothers, Johnnie White, Sandy White, Irvin White and Benjamin White Jr., all of Hilton Head, Joseph White of Savannah, James White Swainsboro, GA, Dr. Charlie White of Englishtown, NJ, Napoleon White of Philadelphia, and Dr. David White of Columbia, MD; three sisters, Mrs. Rosalie White Barnwell of Hilton Head, Mrs. Christine White Brown of Savannah, and Mrs. Pearl J. White Alexander of Baltimore; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Wright-Donaldson Funeral Service of Beaufort is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ella C. White Memorial Scholarship Fund, Hilton
