All records were lost or destroyed during the Civil War. The church records were compiled by a group of parishioners from about 1945- 1960, partly by a search of archive fragments that remained, and mostly by careful recording of the stone inscriptions themselves. We know that many more persons are buried in St. Helena's Churchyard than are on record today.
Unfortunately, the specific location of John B. Barnwell may remain a mystery.
