During the Civil War, Benjamin was a Captain in the 1st Regiment, South Carolina Mounted Militia, under the command of Col. Wm. E. Martin. Capt. Barnwell's company was known as "Palmetto Hussars" with most of the men from Beaufort.
On February 5th 1867, Benjamin married Mary Anna McCaslan, a daughter of James McCaslan and the former Margaret Bates Foster. Benjamin and Mary had three known children:
Mary Sue (1872-1904)
William McCaslan (1876-1955)
James Foster (1878-1943)
Benjamin Smith Barnwell departed this life on November 9th 1907 at his home in Abbeville. He was in the 71st year of his age.
