Born to William and Mary Clark who were born in Oregon in the early 1850's Bertha Clark taught school in Marion and Columbia counties, and in Wahkiakum and Cowlitz counties in Washington. She taught in Columbia County schools beginning in 1900.


In 1904 she married James Adam Barr. She had three children: William Albert, Adda Marion and John Richard. These two sons and one daughter survive, as do seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. After her husband died in 1933 she continued to live on the family farm near Clatskanie for 35 years, but spent her last months in the Columbia District Nursing Home in St. Helens. She has to her credit a long life of achievement throughout her lifetime.
