TAUNTON - John Barradas, husband of the late Wanda (Maciejowski) Barradas, passed away peacefully at his home October 22, 2015 after a brief illness at the age of 99.
He was born in Taunton on April 30, 1916, son of the late Joaquin and Maria (Sylvia) Barradas, and brother to the late Alice (Barradas) Butler and the late Robert Barradas.

As a lifelong Taunton resident, Mr. Barradas, also known as "Barradas the Artist", was well known for his incredible art. He always had a drawing pad and pencil by his side.

He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He was the best story teller and everyone loved his jokes, even when he laughed before the end of the joke.

He, along with his wife, owned and operated Barradas Signs from 1956 to 1978 and many of his signs are still throughout the city.

In retirement he enjoyed painting all types of subjects, especially olde town Taunton.

John received many awards over the years and was involved in many civic groups.

He graduated cum laude from Taunton High School in 1935, after which he attended Rhode Island School of Design, where he graduated in 1941.

He was a life member of the Lodge of Elks No. 150, a member of the Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus.

He was a lifelong member of Holy Rosary Church and a member of the Polish American Citizens Club.

He was also proud of his time on the advisory board of Bristol-Plymouth Regional High School.

He was past president of the Taunton Art Association from 1985 to 1987, and Chairman of Taunton Municipal Airport in the 1980s.

John also designed the Taunton Green Christmas displays in 1948, 1951, 1964, 1967 and 1989, which was the 75th anniversary Christmas display.

He was the recipient of the Key to the City of Taunton on November 15, 1987 by Mayor Richard Johnson for appreciation of artistic contribution in designing the center motif for the Taunton Green Christmas display and community spirit.

He was the building chairman for the Taunton Art Association addition, which was named the Barradas Gallery in his honor.

It was in this gallery where John held his last art show at the age of 99. On this day, September 19, 2015, Mayor Hoye declared as John Barradas Day in the city of Taunton, in appreciation for all he has done for the city.

John's favorite question that day was, "Hey what day is it?" "It's John Barradas Day!"

John is survived by his daughters, Cheryl (Barradas) Dyson and Ava (Barradas) Nadeau; 5 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren, and his 4 legged little buddy, Otis.

He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Tuesday, Oct. 27th at 8 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at Holy Rosary Church at 10 a.m.

Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Calling Hours will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Oct. 26th from 5 to 8 p.m.
