Jane Clemens, mother of Samuel Clemens, was living with her son Orion when she revealed to him in 1886 her "curious and pathetic romance" with Mr. Barret 64 years earlier. At the time, Dr. Barret was a medical student living in Columbia, Kentucky and would ride 18 miles to visit Jane. During their courtship, her uncle Lewis Lampton refused to drive her to a party where Richard was to propose marriage to her. Soon after that Richard left the country and Jane married someone else.

Richard was the son of Dr. Richard F. BARRET. His brother was the former Mayor Arthur B. BARRET. He was survived by his wife Mary FINNEY. Their only child Mazie died when she was 9 years old. He was also survived by two nephews Arthur B. BARRET, well known as a leader of the "third bridge" movement, and James Van S. BARRET.
Mr. BARRET was educated at Heidelberg University and enjoyed the distinction of having been graduated both in law and medicine. He practiced law for many years. He was a student at Heidelberg with the late Dr. Emil Preetorius of St. Louis. In his earlier days Mr. BARRET was the editor of a St. Louis newspapers.
