Son of Simeon Barrett and Sarah Pierce (original Windham Town Clerk marriage record, 1874, which states Cortes was working as a Druggist at the time of the marriage.)
During the Civil War, Cores served with as a Sargeant with Company C of the 4th Vermont Infantry from September 21, 1861 to May 11, 1863. He was awarded a pension for "disease of abdomen and deafness".
In 1867, Cortes was living at his father's house in Windham, when he stopped an intruder from entering the home in the middle of the night (described in the Vermont Record (Brandon, Vermont), October 19, 1867). In November, The Green-Mountain Freeman (Montpelier, Vermont) and other state newspapers reported that the Windham Selectmen were offering a $500 reward for "the alleged attempt to assassinate Mr. C. P. Barrett." Cortes' reports of what happened that night seems to have been considered suspicious by some people throughout Vermont. On November 22, 1875, the Bellows Falls Times (Bellows Falls, Vermont) published a letter signed " J.T." stating "... I feel it is my duty to say a word in justice to Mr. C. P. Barrett, as there has been some intimation by those who do not know him ..., and have only heard the thousand and one stories..". The letter states that Cortes had served gallantly in War, and several other reports of suspicious activity around the town that night should be proof enough that he was tellig the truth.
An obituary was published in the Londonderry Sifter (Londonderry, Vermont) on July 1, 1886. Mr. Barrett had been a correspondent for the Sifter, sending West Townshend news updates for publication.
