Jean is the son of Guillaume Barette and Tysna-Anne-Thiphaine Carre. He married Jeanne Bitouset on 24 November 1661, in Chateau-Richer. They are the parents of the following (verified with PRDH):

Jean and Jeanne took in a boy who had been captured in 1697 near Boston by some pro-French Amerindians. He was sold by them to allies in Quebec and had been educated according to the Catholic Church. He was given the name of Jean-Baptiste (birth name was John Otis) by Jean and Jeanne. He was baptized on 10 April 1700, which was Easter Sunday and stated that he was 17 at the time.

Jean had the following siblings:

4) Charlotte (1638-)

His mother died in 1638 and his father remarried and had two more children. His paternal grandparents are Jean Barrette and Jeanne Bailleul. His maternal grandparents are Richard Carrey and Robine Bailleterre. There is a plaque on the side of St Helier Church that was placed in his honor in 1996.

Jean was buried on 22 December 1708.
