Mary Leamon was born in 1852 into what was the Brigus aristocracy in all but name. Her father was Robert John Cozens Leamon, listed in the 1871 Lovell Directory as "general importer and dealer in British and foreign goods and provisions."

She is the mother of the famous explorer CAPTAIN ROBERT "BOB"ABRAM BARTLETT.

She had 11 children in total: Beatrice Bartlett, Hilda Northway (Bartlett) Wills, Emma Gertrude Bartlett, Mary Elizabeth Wilmott (Bartlett) Angel, William Stewart Bartlett, William Leamon Norman Bartlett, Lewis Goodison Bartlett, Rupert Wilfred Bartlett and Blanche Eleanor Bartlett
