John J. "Tex" Barton died Tuesday at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge Division. He was 70.
He was born in Jamesburg and had lived in Old Bridge before moving to Spotswood 16 years ago.
He retired in 1979 after 50 years as foreman of corrections at New Jersey State Training School For Boys, Monroe. After retiring, he had been a driver for Ryder Student Transportation in the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.
He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
He was an officer of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4589 in Spotswood. He was a past seam dquirrel of Military Order of the Cooties, Pup Tent 69, Spotswood. He was a member of American Legion, Post 253 in Spotswood.
He was a professional musician, playing the guitar for many years in his band, The Travelers. He later played solo for many years, mostly country-western. He was a Gold Card member of the American Federation of Musicians and belonged to the organization for 40 years.
He was a communicant of Holy Trinity R. C. Church, Helmetta.
He was a member of the Old Bridge Moose and the New Jersey State Police Scholarship Fund Committee.
His son, James J., was killed in 1969 while on active duty in Vietnam, and a son-in-law, New Jersey State Trooper William Carroll, was killed in 1984 in the line of duty.
Surviving are his wife of 31 years, the former Carol Chapman; three sons, William of Helmetta, Wesley of Jamesburg and John Andes of Spotswood; two daughters, Suzanne Belotti of Hazlet and Michelle Carroll of th Perrineville section of Millstone; two brothers, Edward and Thomas, both of Jamesburg; two sisters, Estelle Widlicki of Trenton and Genevieve bonus of Ocala, Fla., and seven grandchildren.
Services will be 8:45 a.m. Saturday at The Brunswick Memorial Home, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, followed by a 9:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Trinity R.C. Church. Burial will be at the Holy Trinity Cemetery, Jamesburg.
Memorial contributions may be made to the New Jersey State Troopers Negron-Carroll Scholarship Fund, 3 Bessie Court, Perrineville, N.J. 08535.
