MOS: 0300 Basic Infantryman.
When James arrived in Vietnam 4 February 1969, he was assigned to Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division in Quang Nam Province.
It was while Kilo Company was at An Hoa Base that the base was shelled by hostile mortar fire and James was wounded 16 May and med evac. He was later sent to the USAF Hospital in Tachikawa, Japan for additional medical treatment and died 21 June as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds to the body.
Survived by his mother, Mary D Barton and his 2 brothers; William and Welsey Barton all of 56 W Railroad Ave, Jamesburg, NJ and his father; John J Barton of NJ.
