Curtis Jerome Baston, 74, of rural Pine City, Minn., died peacefully in the midst of his family at his home on Friday, April 11, 2003.

The only child of Claude and Jerena (Luikens) Baston, Curtis was born September 7, 1928, in Britton, S.D. When he was still a young child, Curtis and his parents settled in Frederic, where he attended school and graduated from high school in 1948.

On March 24, 1951, Curtis married Elinor A. Daeffler. Their family grew to include a son and six daughters. Soon after their marriage, Curtis was drafted into the United States Army. He served overseas in the Korean Conflict and received his honorable discharge in 1953. Upon his return home, Curtis enrolled in vocational school where he studied television repair.

In 1959, Curtis and Elinor moved their family to Pine City, Minn. While living there Curtis was employed at Land O' Lakes as a truck driver and steam engineer. In 1966 they made their last move when they purchased their present home located a few miles east of Pine City. Curtis retired from Land O' Lakes in 1988, and from farming in 1990 following a fire that destroyed their barn.

He enjoyed his retirement by going fishing and camping, attending antique tractor shows, and restoring tractors. He also enjoyed spring and fall farm work in South Dakota when visiting his family and friends.

Curtis is survived by his wife, Elinor; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Virginia Baston of Grafton, Va.; daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Donald Brown of Rush City, Minn., Cindy Baston of Dallas, Texas, Donna Baston of Pine City, Julie Counter, Tammi and Kyle Strand, all of Brooten, Minn., Sandra and Alben Mokrzycki of Hinckley, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Jerena Baston; and his grandsons, Nathan and Aaron Mokrzycki.
