Mrs. Barbara Ann (Matherson) Bates, 82 years of Swampscott, died on Monday, August 20, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Wallace Bates, Sr. She was born in Lynn, the daughter of the late Louis and Nellie (Coletti) Matherson. She was raised in Lynn and was a 1954 graduate of Lynn English High School. She has lived most of her life in Swampscott.
Mrs. Bates worked for 29 years with the New England Stores, a local 5 and Dime Company. She also worked for Union Hospital and Sylvania in their engineering department. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She enjoyed Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun and a good poker game. She loved to entertain and going to her camp in Maine.
She is survived by her sons and daughters, Linda Shimer and her husband Kevin of Groveland, Wallace Bates, Jr. and his wife Robin of Peabody, Sue White and her husband Bill of Newburyport, Eric Bates and his wife Michelle of Beverly Hills, Florida. She leaves 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She is the sister of Donna Goodwin and her husband Lee and David Matherson and his wife Mary Ann all of Swampscott. She also leaves several nieces and nephews, she is the sister of the late Eddie and Robert Matherson.
Her funeral will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at 11:00 AM in the SOLIMINE FUNERAL HOME, 67 Ocean Street (Rte. 1A) Lynn followed by burial in Swampscott Cemetery, Swampscott. Visitation period on Thursday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, prior to her funeral. Donations may be made to Care Dimensions Hospice, 75 Sylvan Street Suite B102, Danvers, MA 01923.
