Raymond Henry Bates Captain, SC, USN (Ret), age 93, died Tuesday July 28, 2015 at the Kaplan Family Hospice in Danvers.

Ray was born in Salem, MA on July 27, 1922 to Congressman George and Nora (Jennings) Bates and was the brother of Congressman William H. Bates.

He was in the graduating class of 1939 of Salem High School.

He attended Randles Prep. School preparing for Annapolis, entered the US Naval Academy by Naval Reserve appointment and graduated with the class of 1945 from the Navy Supply School at Harvard. He reported to the USS Cogswell (DD651) in the Western Pacific. His following assignments included USS Mona Island (ARG9); Boston Group LANTRESFLT; Staff, Destroyer Force Atlantic; FASRON 108, NAS Brunswick, ME; Assistant Naval Attache, London; Naval Air Material Officer, Philadelphia; USS DesMoines (CA 134); Office of Chief of Naval Operations (Pentagon) and Naval Area Audit Services, Boston. In addition, Captain Bates pursued business studies at Rutgers University and received his MBA from George Washington University.

Following retirement, he continued in government managing Federal Health and Human Services programs in Boston and retired fully in 1986. He always kept physically active at the Salem YMCA and enjoyed local golf.

Ray and his late wife Muriel (Constantine), were married in their hometown of Salem Massachusetts on Sept 28, 1946 and returned to their roots to be with old friends and relatives. They were both blessed with excellent health and visited San Diego every spring, and Europe in the fall, keeping close contact with relatives, Navy friends and old acquaintances.

Surviving him are his children, Dr. Cynthia A. Morrissette and her husband Gary of Fremont, NH, Marilyn J. Gustavson and her husband Ken of Plaistow, NH and Raymond H. Bates, Jr and his wife Eileen of Marblehead, his five grandchildren Richard L. Wilcock and his partner Eliana, Christopher R. Wilcock and his wife Catie, Jenna Gustavson, Devin and Max Bates, six great grandchildren Dariana, Sicario, Yadiel, Jaelyn Muriel, Isabella and Madeline Nora Wilcock, his sister Carolyn Stanton, sister in law Dorothy Bates and several nephews, nieces and dear friends. He was predeceased by his grandson Connor Raymond Bates, his great grandson Ricardo A. Wilcock, his brothers Congressman William H. Bates, George J. Bates, Jr and Francis Bates, and his sisters Mary Sawtelle, Catherine Ginty and Margaret Bates.

His funeral will be held from the Murphy Funeral, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem on Monday Aug 3, 2015 at 9:15am followed by a Funeral Mass at St. James Church, 143 Federal St, Salem at 10am. Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Sunday August 2, 2015 from 4-8pm. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
