Addie Mae Bates was born on January 17, 1861 in Ogle County, Illinois the third of nine children born to Reuben and Louisa (Blair) Marker. Addie married Addison Albert Wood on December 25, 1879 in Rockford, Floyd County, Iowa. In 1887 Addie and Addison moved to Nebraska finally locating in Dawes County in 1888. They became pioneers of the county where they owned 640 acres of land. Addie and Addison divorced in 1896 and Addison moved back to Iowa. Addie and Addison were parents of five children: Harry A who died at about 6 weeks of age, twins Robert Lincoln (Ruby Gibbs) and Reuben Bayard (Opal Gibbs), Vernon Orvel (Bertha Louise VanBuskirk), and Clark Otis (Mabel Irene Ross). After the death of her sister Dora in June 1924, Addie married Dora's widowed husband, James Austin Bates on June 23, 1925 in Weiser, Washington County, Idaho. He died in Washington County, Idaho on November 26, 1949. She moved back to Chadron, Nebraska and died on September 8, 1953 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law Reubon and Opal Wood.
