AKIN, Doris B. "Pug", of Greenville, S.C., died peacefully on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013 at her home in Franklin, Tenn. She was 87.
Pug Akin grew up at her grandparents' home in Laurens, S.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Houston Akin (2000), parents Mrs. James W. Copeland and Charles Batson and sister Betty Batson Kinsel of San Antonio, Texas.
She is survived by son Robert of Cape San Blas, Fla., daughters Mary Damon Akin R. (Mark) of Franklin, Tenn, G. Akin of Lexington, Ky., grandchildren Kris Akin W. (Kevin) of Lexington, Ky., H. Akin (Debi) of Nashville, Tenn., L. Akin of Denver, Co., Courtnay R. of Franklin, Tenn., Matthew R. (Alicon) of Franklin, Tenn., Curtis, Lucy and Casey H. of Lexington, Ky., and a brother, H. Gasque Batson of Greenville, S.C.
She attended Laurens City Schools and after graduation attended Winthrop College and later graduated from Knoxville Business College as a legal secretary. The first 15 years of her marriage she and her husband Jimmy resided in Brentwood, Tenn., moving to Franklin in 1963. Pug always had a smile on her face and never met a stranger. She was devoted to her friends and cherished her friendships, which were many. She was an active volunteer while living in Brentwood and was a member of the South Carolina Club of Nashville for many years. She and Virginia B. started a Brownie group at First Presbyterian Church and she was very active with children and became youth leader while her children were in high school. She and her husband both taught Sunday School at First Presbyterian Church, which is now Historical Franklin Presbyterian Church, where Mr. Akin was a fifth-generation member. She was very active in the Carter House in her younger years, a charter member of the Heritage Foundation and financial contributor in reopening Carton Plantation. She was a "Pink Lady" at Williamson County Medical Center for 10 years and active in "Meals on Wheels" as well as the Franklin Historical Society and Pioneers Corner. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to five great-granddaughters Libby and Maggie W., S. Akin, Ryely R. and Clair C.
