Leora Jae Nuzum Batson, 96, born Sept. 20, 1915, in Fairmont, went home to be with the Lord on Friday (Sept. 14, 2012) at the John Manchin Senior Health Care Center.

She was the daughter of the late Charles “Dent” and Della Leora “Ora” Shriver Nuzum.

Leora retired from Westinghouse in 1975. She had attended Levels United Methodist Church for several years. She was a member of the Levels Community where she had many dear friends. Leora resided in the Levels Community for nearly 60 years. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed shopping, traveling, playing Scrabble and working the daily crossword puzzles and the Celebrity Cipher with her daughter by proxy, Shelia Tennant. She also enjoyed visiting with company and never knew a stranger. Anyone who visited with Leora seemed to always leave with a little bit better understanding and knowledge of the past as well as the present, due to her extreme wisdom and wit. She was a friend and was enjoyed by all who came in contact with her.

She was a loving wife and homemaker to her late husband, Lawrence L. “Honey” Batson, of 42 years. Leora and Honey were married in a Christmas Eve ceremony on Dec. 24, 1938. She was also a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother by proxy.

Leora was preceded in death by her parents, Dent and Ora Nuzum, and her husband, Honey, as well as two sisters, Edith Nuzum of Fairmont, who passed away as a toddler, and Mabel V. Herron, formerly of Akron, Ohio; three brothers, Harold Nuzum, who died at birth, Arthur A. Nuzum of Fairmont, who passed away as a toddler, and Charles J. Nuzum of Fairmont, who died at the Hammond Clay Mine in 1918.

She was also preceded in death by her dear, dear friend and companion of more than 20 years, Johnie Boyce of Fairmont.

Leora is survived by her daughter and son by proxy, Shelia and Gary Tennant of Fairmont; two granddaughters by proxy, Misty Tennant and Heather Tennant, both of Fairmont; five great-grandchildren by proxy, Sean, Madison, Antonio, Phoenix and Journie; and several nieces and nephews.

Leora was a dear friend, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother “GeeGee” to Danny and Denise Boyce and family of Ohio, Robin and Chet Boyce Brown of Fairmont, and Dwayne and Edna May Boyce and family of Indiana.

In keeping with Leora’s wishes, her body will be cremated.

Friends may gather to celebrate her life at Levels United Methodist Church in Fairmont at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with a special memorial service to follow at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Jim Zinn officiating.
