Emma (Maxwell) Battle was born on November 23, 1910 in Davidson County, Tennessee, the daughter of Fountain E Pitt "Fount" Maxwell Jr (ca 1874–1959) and Luella "Lue" Taylor (1873–1930). {In spite of the fact that Emma's cemetery marker has her born in 1910, Emma was born in late 1909 and was 4 months old when the 1910 census of Davidson County was taken in late April 1910.}

In Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, Emma was 78 years old when she died August 11, 1989.

Survivors included her daughter Mrs Ruby Jean Smith, sons Reverend Walter M Battle, William L Battle and Matthew Battle, sister Mrs Nannie M Whitlow, fifteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
