Betty Batts Agnew passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on December 29, 2016, after a stroke on Christmas day. Loved and appreciated for her quiet elegance, gracious goodheartedness and keen sense of humor, she enjoyed a beautiful holiday with friends and family.
The youngest of five, Betty was born December 9, 1930, on the family farm in Ballinger, Texas, the daughter of Bernard and Beulah Batts. She was preceded in death by her siblings, her husband of 62 years, Bob Agnew, and is survived by her children Lesa, Laura Jane and Gil, their husbands Bill Kastler, Hill Abell and Quinton Jenkins, two grandsons, Tres and Robert Kastler, and Robert's wife Sarah Colwell.
Her gentle kindness was recognized early at Ballinger High School where she was chosen to be Band Sweetheart. She graduated from Texas State College for Women with a degree in Occupational Therapy.
She wistfully related how she graduated on Friday, married on Saturday and moved on Monday.Bob Agnew fell quickly for her intelligence, beauty and wholeheartedness. Together they made a formidable team based on mutual love, respect and responsibility, raising three children and moving 18 times over their 62 years of marriage. She told how, in the beginning, all of their belongings could travel with them in banana boxes in one car.
Betty was the family Executive VP, adroitly managing all domestic affairs, as well as taking over her Mother-in-law's business, Hollywood Cemetery in Houston, which she ran for many years.
She loved Houston and joyously served on different committees with The Assistance League of Houston for years, where her empathic care welcomed and mentored many new members. Likewise, she was a fun, avid and appreciated bridge player active in multiple clubs. Her discreet fealty made her a cherished friend to many.With a sharp eye for detail and talent for deliciousness, she loved to entertain on an intimate level, creating and hosting many beautiful dinner parties.
A passionate reader, cookbooks were her favorite, and she instilled her love of food and communion to each and all of her children and grandchildren. Betty and Bob were also graceful and athletic dancers.
The Family wish to express their immense love and appreciation for the friends and staff of The Querencia, Betty's home of the last eight years, who have been such a supportive community to her and us. Family was above all her priority, both family who are friends, and friends who are family. She spent many happy hours with both.
Following a private family service, a Celebration of Betty's life will be held on Monday, January 2nd, from 4-5:30 at The Querencia, 2500 Barton Creek Boulevard, Austin, Texas. Inurnment will be in the Memorial Garden at The Lakeway Church.
