Ruby Batts Archie, 76, of Danville VA, died Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born February 9, 1934 in Rocky Mount NC, she was the only daughter of Helen Louise Batts. She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Rocky Mount and Virginia State University, Petersburg VA, where she received both her Bachelors and Masters Degree in English. She was married to Cephus N. Archie for forty-eight years. Mrs. Archie was a retired educator with thirty-seven years of service in the Danville Public School System, which included serving as Head of the English Departments at both Langston High School and George Washington High School. She served as Mayor for the City of Danville from 1998-2000 and was a current member of the Danville City Council with 16 years of service. She was a life-member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and a current member of its International Board of Directors. She was also a member of Links, Inc., Order of the Eastern Star, the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club and the Salvation Army. Mrs Archie was, in addition, a faithful member of Loyal Baptist Church where she had served as Chairman of the Board of Education, as Sunday School Teacher and was a current Deaconess. She was also affiliated with numerous other local and national organizations. Survivors include her mother, Helen, and her devoted and loving husband, Cephus; one son, Keith Archie of Woodbridge VA; two daughters, Trina McCorkle (Cedric) and Carla Archie both of Charlotte NC; three grandsons: Cedric McCorkle, Jr, Deondre Weathers and Milek Pittman; two cousins, Charles Batts of Washington, DC and Barbara Andrews of Petersburg, VA and a host of other relatives and friends.
