Bauer was manning the .50 calibre machine gun of B Battery on the Tulagi. He was wounded in both knees and transferred to the Manunda, where he died of wounds at 12:40 on the 23 February 1942. He was buried at sea the same day at 2:30 pm at Lat. 18°15' S Long. 116° 51' E.
Floyd was awarded a Purple Heart, and is memorialised at Fort William Mckinley, Manila, the Philippines. He was twenty-eight years old when he died.
