Mrs. J.D. Bain (Mary Catherine Baxley) was born March 15, 1858 near Fairmont, Clark County, Missouri, and departed this life September 30, 1927 at the age of 69 years 6 months and 15 days. She came to Ottawa County with her parents in 1875. She was united in marriage May 1, 1879 to John D. Bain who departed this life May 30, 1924. To this union were born six children, Etta Maude Tennyson, Bessie Mabel Cline, Edith Idella McDonald, Rhoda Ethel Davis, John Raymond Bain and Lloyd Ellis Bain, all of whom were at her bedside at the time of her death except Etta Maude Tennyson and Lloyd Ellis Bain who preceded her death. Beside the children she leaves twenty-two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, six brothers and one sister and many other relatives and friends to mourn her loss.
The brothers and sister are Martin Baxley, Pasadena, Calif., George Baxley, Cherokee, Ark., Daniel Baxley, Lamar, Kansas, Wm. Baxley, Coffeyville, Okla; Leota Chambers, Delphos, Kansas; Harvey Baxley, Coffeyville, Okla, and Jim Baxley Richland, Kansas. Although they had their own family of children to care for Mr. and Mrs. Bain have always had an open heart for others. For a few years their nephews were with them and then in 1906 they took into their home two motherless children, Hazel Wright then 17 months old who is now Mrs. Hazel Gardner of Florence, Colo., and Wayne Wright then 5 days old now of Lindsborg, Kansas.
Mrs. Bain was converted to the Christian faith in early childhood and after joined the M.E. church at Lamar, Kansas. Her life was full of thoughtful deeds for others. She suffered a paralytic stroke in the spring of 1924 and another a week before her death.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the M.E. church in Lamar. Rev. Courter of Bennington preached the sermon.
Burial was made in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
