Irv, as he was called, was the husband of Bernice Griffith Beard and the father of Miles, Max, and Bruce. He was the brother of John, Marvin, and Edith. Irv grew up in Owasco, Clay Township, Carroll County, Indiana. As a young man, he taught school briefly. As a young married man, he farmed. In 1930, he was supporting his wife and three sons as a gravel contractor. In the 1930s, he worked at the Studebaker Corporation in South Bend. Beginning in the 1940s, he built roads and highways in Indiana, supervising crews that laid asphalt. He was employed as a road builder and operating engineer by the Gast Construction Co., of Warsaw, Indiana. He lived primarily in Warsaw for the last 25 years of his life, and exclusively in Warsaw after his wife's death in 1955. He was a member of the Warsaw Elks Lodge, the Warsaw Rifle and Pistol Club (also known as the Warsaw Gun Club), and the National Rifle Association.

NOTE: Irv ultimately had ten grandchildren -- a granddaughter and three grandsons from his 1st son (Miles), a granddaughter and a grandson from his 2nd son (Max), and two granddaughters and two grandsons from his 3rd son (Bruce).
