World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Cumberland, England, he served as a Private in the 8th Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces, Australian Army. On August 9, 1918, at the Battle of Amiens, Private Beatham's battalion was part of the assault on German positions in Rosieres, France. When the advance was held up by heavy machine gun fire, Private Beatham with a comrade dashed forward on four enemy machine guns, killing ten and capturing ten others. When the final objective was reached, although wounded, he again dashed forward, bombed a machine gun, was riddled with bullets and died two days later. For most conspicuous bravery and self-sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on December 14, 1918.
