Evan Bebb was 27, and living in Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as the 4th Sergeant of Co. D, 4th Iowa Cavalry, on Sept 18, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 15, 1861.

Bebb became a "Reenlisted Veteran" on March 14, 1863. He was later mustered out of the service with the rest of his company on Aug 8, 1865, in Atlanta.

During his period of service, Bebb was promoted from 4th Sergeant to 3rd Sergeant on Dec 1, 1862; then to Quartermaster Sergeant on March 1, 1863; and finally to 1st Sergeant of Co. D on May 1, 1864.

Evan Bebb had three other brothers in Co. D of the 4th Iowa Cavalry: John, Sylvester, and Edward who was a recipient of the Medal of Honor. Another brother, Nathaniel, served with the 25th Iowa Infantry, and died on board the hospital boat "City of Memphis" on Feb 18, 1863.
