US Congressman. He was born as Henry Bedinger III one of seven children in Shepherdstown, Virginia, (now Shepherdstown, West Virginia), to Daniel Bedlinger and his wife Sarah Rutherford Bedlinger on February 3, 1812. He was educated locally and attended the common public schools. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1832. He opened his practice of law in his native Shepherdstown, Virginia, (now Shepherdstown, West Virginia), shortly thereafter and eventually moved to Charlestown, Virginia, where he continued with his practice of law. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Member of the Democratic Party, he then served Virginia's 10th District (Twenty-Ninth Congress and Thirtieth Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1845, to March 3, 1849. He was an unsuccessful Candidate for reelection to the Thirty-First Congress in 1848. After his term in the United States Congress expired he was succeeded in office by United States Representative Richard Parker on March 4, 1849. After leaving the United States Congress he resumed his practice of law. He was then appointed by then-President of the United States Franklin Pierce to serve as United States Chargé d'Affaires from 1853 to 1854, and later as United States Minister to Denmark from 1853 to 1858. He later resigned from those positions and returned to his practice of law until his death only a few months later. He passed away very suddenly from complications of pneumonia in Shepherdstown, Virginia, (now Shepherdstown, West Virginia), on November 26, 1858, at the age of 46, and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Shepherdstown, Virginia, (now Shepherdstown, West Virginia). He had just returned from a trip to Europe and had attended a complimentary dinner in his honor. He was married twice first to Margaret Rust in 1839 and the couple had three children together. His wife Margaret passed away in Jeffersonton, Virginia, on May 20, 1843, at the age of 24, and she was buried in Union Cemetery in Leesburg, Virginia. He married for a second time to Caroline Bowne Lawrence in 1847 and the couple had three children together. His wife Caroline passed away in Flushing, New York, on August 17, 1869, one month shy of her 42nd birthday, and she was buried in Flushing Cemetery in Flushing, New York.
