Anna E. "Annie" Beer was born August 15, 1853 in Sachsen (Saxony) Germany, the second of seven children born to Robert F. and Ernestina Hendler Beer.

Anna came to America with her parents, arriving in New York in 1854. She was only 6 months old. Her older brother, Robert Carl, also came at the age of three years.

The family would first settle in Olean, Indiana in August, 1855. "Ripley County Genealogy" on file at Ripley County Historical Society (Indiana) says of her family: "They transplanted the name and fame of the Beer family of jewelers to America and established a business at Olean, Indiana Aug. 1, 1855. After two years Robert moved to Versailles."

In the 1860 US Census, Anna is shown as seven years old and living with her parents and two brothers (Robert and Otto) in Versailles, Indiana. In the 1870 US Census, she is shown at age 17 in Versailles. By this time all six of her siblings had been born and are shown in the census as: Robert, Otto, Fanny, Alfred, Richard, and Edward.

On December 18, 1873, Anna married widower Eli Dorsey Hunter, who had four children from his previous marriage. They would have four sons and two daughters together:
Robert Smith Hunter (1874-1935)
Clarence Otto Hunter (1876-1941)
Dr. Tony Edward Hunter (1878-1918)
Richard Arthur Hunter (1881-1948)
Alice Pearl Hunter [Spellman] (1884-1959)
Laura E. Hunter (1885- )

Anna's husband would die in 1890. Three years later, she married widower Charles Avery, who had nine children from his previous marriage.

The 1900 US Census shows Anna living with her husband, Charles Avery, his son, William Avery, and two of her children, Richard and Laura E. Hunter in Covington, Kentucky. Charles' occupation is shown as "iron worker." In the 1910 US Census, she is shown as still living in Covington with Charles, his son, William Avery, and one of her daughters, Laura Hunter. Her other daughter, Alice Hunter, has married and lives next door with her husband Lon Spellman.

The 1920 US Census shows Anna and Charles still living in Covington, KY. None of their children live with them at this time. By the 1930 US Census, they had moved back to Anna's hometown of Versailles, Indiana.

Charles Avery died in 1938, probably in Versailles, at the age of 87. Anna would pass away in Versailles on February 8, 1943 at the age of 89. Her daughter, Alice (Mrs. Lon Spellman), is shown as the informant on her death certificate. Her grandson, Dr. Lowell G. Hunter (son of Clarence Otto Hunter), is shown as the attending physician. The death certificate indicates she was buried in Cliff Hill Cemetery, Versailles, Indiana, on 10 February 1943.
