Selma Friederike Altman, age 92, a resident of rural Parkers Prairie, died Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at her home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 4 at 10 a.m. at St. Williams Catholic Church in Parkers Prairie with Father Leroy Scheierl officiating. Music will be provided by organist Maureen Roloff, vocalists Dennis Behnke and Pat Johnson, and the St. Williams Church Choir. Burial will take place at St. Williams Catholic Cemetery in Parkers Prairie. Pallbearers will be Jerry Altman, Leicia Altman, Jamie Altman, Kayla Benzinger, Dennis Behnke and Clarence Block.

Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. with an 8:30 p.m. parish prayer service at Lind Family Funeral Home in Parkers Prairie. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral at the church.

Selma was born June 16, 1918 in Effington Township to August J. and Alvina B. (Brede) Behnke. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in North Effington. She grew up in North Effington Township and attended District 218 Country School. Following her education, she continued helping on the family farm. She was a waitress at Uhde's Café in Parkers Prairie and played piano with the Willie Karger band at local dances in the Parkers Prairie/Urbank areas.

She was united in marriage to Ambrose Altman on October 2, 1955. Following their marriage, she and her husband lived and worked on a farm, and later moved to their current residence where she lived until her death. She was a member of St. Williams Catholic Church in Parkers Prairie. She enjoyed living on the farm and especially loved animals and milking the cows. Some of her other favorite activities included baking cookies, gardening, having coffee and lunch with friends, and caring for her grandchildren.

Selma is survived by her son, Jerry (Leicia) Altman of Parkers Prairie; a daughter, Joyce (Vic) Benzinger of Parkers Prairie; five grandchildren, Kayla (Lynn Seger) Benzinger, Jenna Benzinger, Alayna Benzinger, Jamie Altman and Julianne Altman; and two nephews, Norman Hollatz and Dennis (Theresa) Behnke.

Selma was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Richard Behnke and Henry Behnke; and two sisters, Anna Hollatz and Emma Schwanz.

Arrangements are provided by Lind Family Funeral and Cremation Service, with chapels in Miltona and Parkers Prairie.
