Wilma (Augusta) E. (Emilie) Behrens Alpers was born in Lincoln on July 7, 1922, to Otto and Ida Schwerdtfeger Behrens. She was baptized on July 9, 1922, at St. John Lutheran Church, Lincoln, by the Rev. H. Kroening. She attended St. John’s Lutheran Elementary School and was confirmed at St. John on March 21, 1937, by the Rev. H. Kroening, receiving I Corinthians 6:20 as her confirmation verse.
After being graduated from Lincoln High School in 1941, Wilma took correspondence courses in education and also taught in various schools, including St. John Elementary School from 1944-1948. After many years of teaching and study she was graduated from Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Neb., in 1954, and continued to do graduate work at the University of Nebraska. She also taught at the Topeka Lutheran School.
From 1954 through 1957 she served as Dean of Women at Concordia Teachers College.
On June 23, 1957, she was married to the Rev. Arlin Alpers at St. John Church, Lincoln, by the Rev. Frank Schaefer. Their union was blessed with three children. During her married life, she lived in Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas, where her husband served the Good shepherd Lutheran Church, Battle Creek, Iowa; Christ Lutheran Church, Hutchinson; and, since Sept. 1974, the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Humboldt.
She was active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Nation of Love, the church Sunday School, weekday school, church choir and various women’s organizations at St. Peter’s.
Wilma died on Thursday, Dec. 22, 1988, at Neosho Memorial Hospital, Chanute. She had served her Lord for 66 years, five months and 15 days and now rests from her labors with the Lord.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Arlin, of the home; one son, Mark of Lawrence; two daughters, Denise Elser, Emporia, and Karen Alpers, Charlotte, N.C.; her mother, Ida Behrens of Lincoln; two brothers, Roy Behrens, Lincoln, and Floyd Behrens, Winterhaven, Fla., one sister, Elda Mayfield, Concordia; and two grandchildren.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m.Monday, Dec. 26, 1988, at St. Peter’s with the Rev. Samuel McPeek, the Rev.Dale Doerr and Dr. Eugene Schmidt officiating. Burial was at 11 a.m. Tuesday,Dec. 27, at the St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery, Lincoln, with a memorial service at St. John after the committal service, the Rev. Gerald Radtke officiating.
Memorials may be made to the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Lutheran World Relief or the American Diabetes Association.
Kunkel Funeral Chapel of Humboldt was in charge of the arrangements.
