Son of Joseph and Eliza (White) Belknap.

On 16 Jun 1844 Alonzo, 17, married Mary A. Paine at Thompson, Windham County, Connecticut. They divorced in May 1851, according to his pension file. His wife, Mary, married G. A. McKinstry, and they moved to Illinois.

On 12 Jul 1861 Alonzo, a bootmaker, mustered into service with Company G, of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Sutton, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 34 years, 9 months and 1 day old.

He was wounded in action on 21 Oct 1861 at The Battle of Ball's Bluff, Leesburg, Virginia.

He died on 24 Oct 1861 at Poolesville, Montgomery County, Maryland, of wounds received at Ball's Bluff. He was 35 years and 13 days old.

There is a burial listed for him in Poolesville Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery. It is unclear which is the cenotaph.

On 20 Sep 1866 Eliza Belknap, his mother, received a pension to surviving family member based on Alonzo's service.

He left one child, Melissa, who was over twenty at the time of his death.
