Son of Henry Thomas and Alice Agnes Bell. A draughtsman prior to enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force, As Company Sergeant Major, he embarked from Fremantle for overseas aboard HMAT "Ascanius" (A11) on 29 June 1915. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) on 1 March 1916. He was killed in action at Pozieres, France, aged 21.
