Helen Irene Baxter, age 85, of Independence, passed away Friday, September 16, 2016. at Medicalodge.
Graveside memorial celebration of life will be at 10 AM Saturday, September 24, 2016, at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence with Chaplain Mike Graham of Harry Hynes Hospice officiating. Friends may call Friday from 9AM-6PM with the family receiving friends from 4-6PM at Zach Webb Family Funeral Service. Memorial contributions to the American Legion post 139 may be sent to Zach Webb Family Funeral Service, 1475 S. 10th, Independence, KS 67301.
Helen Irene Baxter was born February 9, 1931, at the family farm northeast of Melrose, IA, to John and Anna (Zonder) Bellis. She was raised and went to school in Melrose and Albia, IA. She married Floyd Baxter and he preceded her in death in 1974. The family lived in Arizona, Texas, and Kansas when they became partners in the Baxter Pallet Company in Independence. She also worked for Emerson Electric for 19 years and bar tended at the Westernaire, Linda's Lounge, C&C Tavern, Steve's, the Prairie Inn, and at American Legion, where she once managed. She was a lifetime member of American Legion post 139 and VFW post 1186 Women's Auxilliary. She enjoyed her grandchildren, Thanksgiving with the family, fishing, and tending bar for her friends.
Helen is survived by: Four children; Donna Baxter, Bob Baxter, Mary Schlotman, and Janet Coatney, all of Independence. Sister; Katherine Ryan, Centerville, IA. Grandchildren; Matt Baxter, Chris Schlotman, Kayla (Casey) Long, Amber Coatney, Morgan Baxter, Scotty Quisenberry. Great grandchildren; Nalijah Schlotman, Landon Long, Adelyn Baxter, Christopher Schlotman, Hunter Long, and Brooklynn Long.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Baxter. Daughters; Tina Baxter and Diana Campbell. Sisters; Lucille Gobel and Marie Kinnard. Brother; Johnny Bellis.
