Deputy Fire Chief Alfred M. Belmont, age. 51, of 1259 Mohawk St., entered into rest Saturday, February 7, 1987, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. After a two-year illness.
A 29-year veteran of the Utica Fire Department, who rose through the ranks to Deputy Chief. at the time of his illness, was the commander of the Utica Fire Prevention Bureau.
He was born in Utica on April 20, 1935, a son of Nancy Pacific and the late Michael Belmont. Alfred was a life long resident of Utica and, received his education in local schools.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, serving as personal armed escort to the Commandant of the 3rd Naval District and also to the Vice Admiral and Rear Admiral.
On January 12, 1963, at the Church of the Imaculate Conception in Queens, NY, he was married to the former Carol Allbright.
Surviving are his wife, Carol; his mother, Nancy; two sons, Michael A. Belmont and Scott A. Belmont; a brother and
sister-in-law, Allen and June Belmont, all of Utica; also several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on December 21, 1967, to Captain on January 1,1975, and to Deputy Chief on October 2, 1982. During his years of service, he attended the National Fire Academy in Maryland. He received certificates of Leadership in Fire Inspection, also basic intermediate and advanced fire training.
Deputy Chief Belmont was also involved in promoting courses in Emergency Medical Training in New York State.
In 1976, he was honored by the American Legion and the Utica Fire Fighters Assn. Local #32 as "Firefighter of the Year". October 7,1976, was declared Alfred Belmont Day in Utica.
The 51-year old Belmont was the recipient of the Mayoral Award in 1969 for saving the lives of three children in a fire on. He also was injured on June 30, 1966, he was trapped for 45 minutes when a building collapsed during a fire.
In 1978, he graduated from Mohawk Valley Community College with an A.A.S. Degree in Fire Protection Technology. Belmont was the first Utica firefighter to receive an associate of applied science degree in fire protection technology from Mohawk Valley Community College.
On Oct. 8, 1980, he was awarded the coveted Service Medal for helping to rescue four youngsters in a blaze.
A full departmental funeral will be held. Uniformed firefighters will attend the funeral and fire apparatus will be in the funeral procession.
The funeral will be at 9:15 tomorrow from the Hobaica-Gigliotti Funeral Home, 1122 Culver Ave., and at 10 a.m. from the Church of the Blessed Sacrament. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
