Mrs Sarah BENEDUM Dies, Wife of Oil Wildcatter

Sarah, wife of Michael L BENEDUM, died early today at the family home, Greystone, on Woodland Rd -- she had been ill for several months. Despite her illness, she had been able to ride Downtown w/her husb to his office, and make another trip in the PM to take him home.

She was born in Blacksville WV, d/o John & Victoria [MARSH] LANTZ, a well-to-do farming family in Monongalia Co. She rec'd early schooling at Blacksville, later grad from Waynesburg College.

In 1896, she married the young West Virginian, who was to become the nation's No 1 wildcatter & multi-millionaire oil man. The couple's 1st home, an apartment in Cameron WV, was above the 1st Nat'l Bk, in which Mr BENEDUM had bought the controlling interest... next moving to Wheeling... (more on Mr B's career) In 1909, they moved to Pittsburgh, where they remained.

Sarah was an active member of the Emory Methodist Church, Highland Ave.

Only immediate survivor, husband Michael. Private, funeral services at the home, and burial in family mausoleum, Homewood Cem.

Mrs Sarah N BENEDUM... divided her estate, equally between her husband and a charitable trust... a substantial portion to the Claude Worthington BENEDUM Foundation, named for the BENEDUM's only son, who died in the Army during W W I.

... the foundation, a non-profit corp, established (in 1944) for religious, charitable, scientific, literary & educational purposed. (more on estate and donation/ annuities...) ... for students needing assistance to complete their education, at West Virginia Univ.
