Author. He served as a civil servant in the Ministry of Munitions and Reconstruction during World War I when he became convinced of the benefits of state intervention in economics. His views altered in the 1920s when he became a follower of classical liberalism. He was the author of more than twenty books and many pamphlets about his political ideas, including "The Return to Laisser Faire" (1929), "Debt" (1938) and "The State, the Enemy" (1953). His best known work, "The Confessions of a Capitalist" (1925), sold a quarter of a million copies and remained in print for twenty years. He was also a member of the Reform Club and a founder member of the Society for Individual Freedom.
