Age 90, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at his home September 7, 2010.

Born in Mardela Springs, MD on November 26, 1919, Stewart was the son of the late Crawford and Jenny Shockley Bennett. He graduated from Salisbury Teachers College in 1940 and received his Masters from the University of Delaware. He taught English and Math in Felton and the Newark School Districts for 33 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Second World War, stationed in Fort Meade. Stewart was also a member of Newark United Methodist Church and his hobbies were woodworking and camping. Stewart will be remembered as a man truly devoted to his family.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marjorie. J. Bennett; three sons, David S. Bennett of the Philippines, Gary P. Bennett and his wife Jane of Bear, DE, and Mark A. Bennett and his wife Lisa of Newark; a daughter Marla Carter and her husband David of Newark; and eight grandchildren, Aubrey, Emily, Adam and Evan Bennett and Stephen, Megan, Kaitlin and Kristen Gazdick. He was preceded in death by his daughter Pamela, his brothers Paul, Elmer and Philip Bennett and his sisters Isabel Wright and Edna Bailey.

A celebration of Stewart's life will be held at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 West Main St., Newark, DE 19711 on Saturday September 11, at 11 am. Friends and family are invited to a visitation at the funeral home beginning at 10 am. Burial will be in White Clay Creek Church Cemetery.

Charitable contributions in Stewart's memory may be made to Delaware Hospice c/o the funeral home.
