Arthur Edgar Bentley was a service casualty of WW1.

Arthur was born in West Norwood, his birth being registered in Lambeth and he was the son of a baker, Edwin William (Senior) and Elizabeth Bentley (nee Cullington). He was a brother to Herbert, Florence, Edwin William, John James, Louisa Maude, Arthur Edgar, Ivy Emily, William Colson, Maude Adeline and Beatrice Victoria Bentley. On the 28th April 1898 Arthur, Beatrice, William and Ivy were baptised at Emmanuel Church.

Arthur attested in WW1 on the 10th December 1914 and served as Private 1860 17th Battery, 3rd Bn. Royal Fusiliers. Describing himself as a "poulterer", Arthur served with the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in France where he first began to suffer from illness and then was transferred to Salonika and then Malta where he entered hospital for a second time suffering from TB and Malaria. He returned to England due to his condition and was in the Brondesbury Park Hospital in Hounslow, Middlesex, and then in the 2nd West General Hospital in Manchester where he was diagnosed as suffering from Pulmonary TB.

Arthur was discharged from the army on the 8th January 1917 as being medically unfit for active service, his condition being "caused and aggravated" by his military service. He was awarded the Silver War Badge shortly before his death, but he passed away at home and was laid to rest at WEST NORWOOD CEMETERY in the private family plot on the 22nd March 1919 aged 28.

Also interred in the same plot are his parents Edwin and Elizabeth and his sister Beatrice Victoria who passed away in 1902. The grave is marked by a Commission Headstone (CH) indicating that it is an official War Grave.
