Born in Grimstead, Norway. After service in the Norwegian Merchant Marines he settled in New York City, where he met and married his wife Olga Louise Christensen. Homesteaded in Argonne Twp, Adams County, North Dakota. He was a carpenter, and helped build many local structures including Immanuel Norwegian Lutheran Church. His rope skills (learned as a sailor) were called into service by local grain elevators who needed ropes spliced.

Olaf A. Bentsen, also buried here, is his brother.
